Fitted v Freestanding Wardrobes
We help to guide you through the differences between these two styles of furniture for your bedroom project so you can better understand which is right for your individual home, room and personal requirements and style.
Fitted wardrobes
Fitted wardrobes are a great way to enhance your bedroom and even the value of your home. Typically fitted bedrooms would be floor to ceiling in the room, with a plinth at the top and bottom to give symmetry. They are often wall to wall in a bedroom but not always. Because they go all the way to the ceiling, they have to be built standing upright. Here at online bedrooms, we have a very simple, patented system that allows you or your fitter to build the wardrobes along your wall very simply and very quickly. Fitted wardrobes allow you flexibility in the interior options, from long hanging for dresses and trousers to drawers, shelves and short, double hanging for t shirts and blouses.
We have a range of matching chests of drawers, bedside tables and other bedroom furniture to bring the whole room together seamlessly. All of our cabinets come with individual worktop panels as standard. If you would like to be able to create a run of base cabinets or drawer chests and want 1 seamless worktop for them then please contact us prior to placing your order to specify your requirements.
Not all rooms are the same height or width, which means fitted wardrobes will always need to be made to measure for your room. – We will ask you for your room height at the checkout and make the wardrobes the perfect height for your room.
See our room measuring guide for help on measuring and our planning guide for help with planning your room. We exclusively offer supply-only fitted wardrobes, so you can save yourself a lot of money by simply measuring and assembling yourself (or employ a handyman) instead of paying a premium for a retailer to do it.

Freestanding bedroom furniture
Freestanding furniture is a great option if you want to be able to take it with you when you move house or if you aren’t a DIY pro and don’t want to pay one to fit the wardrobes for you!
Freestanding is not quite what it sounds like in the name. We always recommend that you fix all furniture from online bedrooms to the wall for added safety, you might even call it Semi-Fitted furniture. Key differences to fitted bedrooms furniture is that freestanding wardrobes don’t go all the way to the ceiling. They can go very close but, as they are build laying down and then stood upright, you need to ensure that you order them at least 6cm shorter than your ceiling height.
To ensure that you will be able to stand it up after you’ve assembled it. Many people don’t realise that you can also go wall to wall with freestanding bedroom furniture. At online bedrooms your freestanding wardrobes can also be made to measure and you still have all the same internal options for your wardrobes too! The beauty of freestanding wardrobes from online bedrooms is that they are so simple to assemble, you won’t even need a fitter or other tradesperson to do the install. If you have a screwdriver and a drill then you have all the tools you need.
Our easy to follow assembly instructions will guide you through the rest. Fitted bedrooms are great if you don’t own your own house or aren’t planning on staying in your house forever as you can take them with you very easily when you move and re assemble and fit in your new house. You can always add to them if the room size is bigger at your new house!
They also offer you great flexibility if you want to change the layout of the room around in the future. The main key difference between freestanding and fitted wardrobes is that the fitted wardrobes always go up to the ceiling whereas freestanding wardrobes don’t.
Freestanding wardrobes are also cheaper as you don't need to employ tradespeople to fit them.
